On most Saturday afternoons, I can be found wandering around the Grand Lake Farmers Market and the Lake Merritt neighborhood of Oakland. This has become something that I look forward to every week. Farmers markets in the Bay Area are pretty serious business. Besides the amazing amount of fresh, locally grown produce and goods that can be acquired for a pittance in comparison to most organic groceries, the people watching is some of the best in The Bay. Oakland is such a vibrant, colorful & diverse city. It's definitely a place that has stolen my heart. Though, I digress. This isn't really a post about farmers markets at all (which I really should do in the future). This is more a quick attempt at showing you something I've worn recently, which just so happened to be during a Saturday spent wandering around Lake Merritt.

2011, YOU WERE BEAUTIFUL

I know I'm late to the party on posting a re-cap of my 2011, but man oh man, what a stellar/beautiful/emotional/amazing year it was! Going through pictures and blog posts has left me feeling quite nostalgic and, even more so, excited over the good fortune that 2012 will bring for us all. Without further ado, here's a look at what 2011 gave to me...

January - Most of this month was spent in Northern California, where I explored wine country for the first time. I honestly don't remember many of the wines that I tasted, but I do remember falling in love with the fog & all of the amazing nooks & crannies that the lovely town of Healdsburg has to offer.

February - I was able to spend some time with one of the great loves of my life, New York City. NYFW was happening, but we didn't go to any of the events and used the time as an excuse to connect with some of the loveliest ladies who call this great city home.

March - Nashville had me for the entire month of March. I consumed way too much coffee from Crema, a lot of tacos from Rosepepper and my sweet, sweet Sarah came to visit from Chicago.

April - This was a fantastic month spent in San Francisco. I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Ashley, Jen & Annalise - 3 girls who I am so happy to now call dear friends. I'm pretty sure this is also the month that I decided I wanted to call the Bay Area home.

May - Back to Nashville & definitely a relaxed month for me. I don't recall anything exciting happening, other than becoming acutely aware of Spring and the change in seasons. While I didn't realize it at the time, I'm pretty sure this is because I was beginning plans to relocate somewhere that doesn't really have seasons.

June - My birth month! I turned 33 and spent the time wandering around Washington D.C. I had not been to my nation's capitol since I was a teenager, so it was nice to experience such an amazing amount of history as an adult.

July - This is the month that I learned to play poker, played in a tournament, cleaned house in the first round and tragically failed in the second because my ego was out of control. I haven't played poker since.

August - Another laid back month in Nashville, but busy for sure, as this was a time of final preparation for my move across the country. I spent a lot of time with dear friends and visiting all of my favorite Music City haunts, saying goodbye to a place that gave me a great home base for several years.

September - This month was huge! I got rid of most of my personal belongings, save what I could fit in a mini van, and made a solo trek across the United States, failing to document any of it. This is also the month that I went to the Alameda Point Antique Faire for the first time and quickly realized that being a vintage dealer in the Bay was going to be fruitful & exciting for me.

October - If one thing is for certain, San Franciscans love Halloween. Isla threw an amazing party, we danced, drank wine/cocktails and made mischief happen.

November - This was an interesting month for me, albeit a quiet one. The highlight of this time for me was spending a snowy weekend in Lake Tahoe. There's magic in The Sierras! This is also the month that I got an iPhone and started to become a little too lazy when it comes to my DSLR - must change that in 2012!

December - What a fantastic way to end such a glorious year! Jen hosted a fancy holiday party in her Haight Ashbury apartment. There was dancing, eating, drinking & more different kinds of cookies than I have ever seen in one place.

I hope you all had as fantastic a 2011 as I! Here's to having a fondness for the past & moving forward into a new age. 2012, I've got a great feeling about you!

LIVE SIMPLY

Hello! I've been meaning to write some sort of post about all of my goals and such for the new year, but each time I've sat down to do so, the words just haven't been able to come to me. It's not that I'm not excited over 2012. In fact, I'm thrilled! I think it's more that I want to be more in the moment with the life that I'm living & the things that I'm doing rather than attempt to sum it all up in a blog post.

While perusing the interwebs the other day for interesting art, I ran across this very inspirational print from a lovely shop called Volume 25 on Etsy. I quickly saved this image to my inspiration folder and it didn't occur to me until tonight that this really embodies everything I want myself & my life to aspire toward in the new year.

Simply put, I want to live more simply. I've managed to maintain a somewhat minimalist lifestyle for several years. Having lots of stuff has always felt more like a burden than a blessing to me. Recently, I've been thinking of ways to continue living this lifestyle and have it be more environmentally conscious. Last month, I touched on a few things that were running through my mind and have decided to use these thoughts to cultivate a more simple and eco-friendly life for myself. I aspire to only purchase clothing & goods that are vintage, secondhand & free of sweatshop production, to continue to feed myself with healthy, locally grown food & to pay closer attention to the products that I use in my home and on my body. So far, it's all been pretty easy. In fact, it's been downright simple!

What are some of your aspirations for the new year?

Today is a day of airports for me. I've actually been traveling for the past 10 days, visiting with family & friends, celebrating the holiday season. It's been nice to get away, but I'm truly so excited to return to The Bay Area. It's funny how a place I've only lived for 3 months feels so much like home. While I've enjoyed the simplicity of living out of a small suitcase, going from time zone to time zone and seeing many people I care about, there's a way of living & an energy in California that's simply more my speed. 10 days, 6 airports & 7 cities later, I'll be back in The Golden State!

FANCY HOLIDAY PARTY

This past weekend was jam packed full of festivities, including a very fancy holiday party hosted by Ashley, Jen & Annalise. ALPHABET OF MYSTERY

I'm a person who is constantly seeking meaning and interpretation of the symbols, signs and shapes that I recognize in everyday life. This is probably why I'm so attracted to geometrically printed textiles. After spending a bit of time thinking about the print on this dress, it occurred to me that it reminds me of Runic script, which is pretty neat. I like to think of this ancient alphabet as being somewhat hieroglyphical. In my dress, I'm seeing many r's, g's and w's, which are symbols for 'journey', 'gift' and 'joy'. This makes me so happy, as lately I feel as though I've been on quite an important conquest that has produced many joyous gifts in my life thus far. Perhaps I'm over analyzing a simple print too much, but the feeling that I get from thinking that what I'm wearing is a representation of my current state of mind is a joyous gift all on its own.

IN WHICH I KEEP IT REAL

As the new year steadfastly approaches, my mind has been consumed with ideas and ways to make changes to this site and to my business that are better suited to my personal needs and desires. Truth be told, I do not sincerely love fashion and I have many ethical qualms with the industry itself. I do, however, love design, style and, of course, vintage. Lately, I've been struggling with this blog and how I want to maintain it in a way that feels more natural to me. Many of the things I am sincerely passionate about have to remain either silent or neutral in my voice because this blog is an extension of a business I've spent the past 6 years building & nurturing.

My professional life is a small part of who I am and could never define me as a whole. Yes, I love being a shopkeeper, I love promoting sustainable & ethical shopping through vintage style, but I am also an activist, an artist, a feminist and a highly spiritual being. To even write this out and reveal it seems somewhat scary to me, but it shouldn't and that's a struggle I am willing to face and use for what I'm certain will result in something positive.

Letting this all out has freed me to allow myself to produce ideas for content for this blog that will more accurately reflect my passions; namely - supporting independent businesses & artists & buying local, handmade & second hand goods as a means to promote sustainability, reduce our carbon footprint & help reduce sweatshop production. I'm excited over new ideas I have for content and to combine them with posts that you may already enjoy reading on this blog. I hope that you enjoy my new ideas when I share them with you!

WEEKEND PEEKS

This weekend was a magical jolt to the soul; a social, spiritual & creative awakening, if you will. Most of my time was spent wandering around Oakland & Berkeley by foot, having interesting conversations, seeing interesting sites, hanging out at public libraries and eating healthy, delicious food. I also was artistically inspired to create for reasons other than work (I still am), which was such a breath of fresh air. My Sunday afternoon was spent in the company of sweet lady friends (Kathleen & Ashley) at the DNA Storefront Pop Up Shop, perusing pretty vintage wares and telling my secrets. It all ended with an impromptu dinner party & a late night drive home, leaving me to absorb everything amazing that had happened over a 2 day span. I wouldn't have had it any other way.

I have a confession to make. I've worn this dress twice this week, which is not actually an uncommon thing for me when I fall head over heels in love with a garment. Such is the case with this dress. It's comfortable, pretty and the tiers of floral printed ruffles make it more interesting for me then simply throwing on jeans & a t-shirt and calling it an easy outfit. For me, dresses are so much easier and definitely more fun. After all, if we aren't having fun in our clothes, than what's the point of getting dressed everyday?

Few things feel more luxurious than being cloaked in velvet. While I'm not a lover of cold weather, velvet gives me a reason to look forward to Winter every year. It doesn't get very cold in the Bay Area, but I still feel as though I should fully embrace seasonal trends and textiles, especially those that I truly love. Ironically enough, I've also been wearing lots of florals this Autumn to combat a few gloomy days here and there with a bit of printed cheer. Despite the occasional gray sky, it's hard to feel anything less than whimsical and happy when covered in bouquets of roses.

MV: Tell us a little bit about yourself, your business, who you are, where you're located.

WATN: Hi – my name in Emily and I head up WearAreTheyNow, a vintage clothing and accessory shop on Etsy. Besides vintage, some of my other passions are animal rescue, gardening, chocolate, writing, baking, antiquing…oh, and did I mention chocolate?

I live in New Jersey but dream of moving to a place where I can have a farmette – complete with a donkey and two goats. My husband is the collector of the family, but I do pick up broaches and compacts featuring dogs (mostly terriers) that pass my way. What else makes me happy? A brisk 67º day, dragonflies, just-from-the-oven chocolate chip cookies and cheesy 80s movies.

MV: What inspired you to start your business and how would you like to see it develop in the future?

WATN: I was a professional dancer. I danced to all the old stuff – the GOOD stuff: swing, Charleston…anything Big Band. And I got to wear the coolest costumes. I loved the silhouettes (not to mention the ‘swish’ of a wonderful full circle skirt!). That’s when I decided I’d rather wear ‘the real thing’.

The idea for the store? I have to credit HGTV…and my husband. I was watching House Hunters International. On the show, a woman was looking to move to France, buy a historic farmhouse and open a vintage shop. I looked at my husband and said, “She’s living my life” (sans the France part). He encouraged me to go for it. And that’s how the store was born. (I’m still working on the historic farmhouse, though).

With my shop, wearability is really important to me, so I pay special attention to picking garments and accessories that I consider to be ‘wearable vintage fashion’. For me, it’s not enough for a dress, shoe or handbag to be vintage. It needs to be totally wearable – and fabulous!

Eventually, I would love to see the WearAreTheyNow Etsy shop go solo and evolve into its own independent online store.

MV: How would you define your personal style? Where do you draw your greatest influences and what are you heaviest sources of inspiration?

WATN: I’m always on the go so I prefer clothes that are carefree and ‘move with me.’ As such, cardis, scooter dresses and swing coats work well for me. I’m a huge fan of art deco – the lines and detail are simply gorgeous. I also have a thing for tulle...the poofier the better!

It’s hard to pick just one style icon. I love the elegance of the Hepburn’s…Katharine and Audrey. The timelessness of Lauren Bacall. And who doesn’t love Grace Kelly?

MV: What are some of your wardrobe wishlist items for the current F/W season?

WATN: Saddle shoes…would really like some cute saddle shoes. Oh, and a really fabulous Letterman sweater. Yeah, I want one of those, too.

MV: Anything else that you care to share or that you're particularly excited about these days?

WATN: In the next few months, I’ll be opening a sister shop to WearAreTheyNow. On its shelves: kitschy and cool vintage kitchen, housewares and home décor. So watch for it come 2012!

I received a box of goodies this week from Crush Vintage to play around with and I instantly thought this dress would make such a perfect holiday hostess frock. We're hosting 22 friends and family members for Thanksgiving this year for a fantastic day of feasting and toasting our thanks. This also happens to be my favorite holiday. I love any reason to get a big group of people together to share a meal. While I feel very thankful every day for so much, it's nice to have a day devoted to focusing on gratitude, especially if showing your devotion means eating several different kinds of pie!

MV: Tell us a little bit about yourself, your business, who you are, where you're located.

CV: Crush Vintage is a growing, vintage clothing business located in the heart of Napa Valley. We have several employees (including me!), photographers, interns and our amazing models! We have two stores, one on Ebay and one on Etsy. Ebay is more trend driven...that is where we use our models. Etsy is classic 60's era clothing and older. Everyone here LOVES fashion and we find it so hard to part with some of our pieces!

MV: What inspired you to start your business and how would you like to see it develop in the future?

CV: My vintage collection started several years ago when I purchased my first leopard print coat. I was hooked. My collection grew and I decided to purge some items from my closet. I had a great response and the store just grew from there. In the future, I can't wait until our blog, www.crushvintage.com, is finished and I can start posting away!

MV: How would you define your personal style? Where do you draw your greatest influences and what are you heaviest sources of inspiration?

CV: I love mixing modern pieces with vintage, whether it is a fabulous huge collar choker, or a sweet beaded cardigan. And I always pair my vintage with swoon-worthy heels or wedges! My source of inspiration is a melange of "Street Style" and "Editorial". I love blogs that show real-life girls and what they wear every day, but I also love the high fashion magazines and their unattainable couture clothing! Our studio has inspiration boards galore, and I think we subscribe to every magazine and blog that deals with fashion out there.

MV: What are some of your wardrobe wishlist items for the F/W season?

CV:My must have items this season are a pair of leopard booties, leather skater skirt and slouchy sweater.

MV: Anything else that you care to share or that you're particularly excited about these days?

CV: We have so much to be excited about these days....we just moved into a new, bigger studio and now we have all our vintage racks and our photo studio all in one place...so efficient! We have also been teaming up with www.holephotography.com for some lookbook shots for the upcoming wedding season. You can check our Facebook page for a sneek peek look at some of the images! And I just came back from a HUGE vintage haul that I can't wait to stock the store with!

I love the busyness of the holiday season. This week, I've been a bit of a hermit, hanging out in a house in the woods, working on things and noshing diligently. Lots of tea and bubble baths have also been on the agenda, as I've been under the weather. Yesterday, I took an entire day to drink tea, read and watch films. I think it's what I needed, as I feel so much better already!

Breaking news! Color blocking is out & texture blocking is in. Ok, maybe that's not true. I don't suspect wearing more than one color will ever be out (isn't that all color blocking really is?). I do think playing with texture is just as important as playing with color, though. I found this fantastic skirt during my first trip to the Alameda Point Antique Faire and have been holding onto it, patiently, for over a month while waiting for the right moment to wear it. When my sweet sponsor, Miss Tips Vintage, sent me this amazing metallic foil tank, I knew I wanted to pair it with the skirt. My favorite fringe jacket seemed to be the perfect accompaniment to my texture happy ensemble. All in all, I think it was the perfect outfit for a night of cocktails & snacks with a sweet, new friend!

There's something to be said for weekends where being cozy is all that matters. I basically lived in this outfit for my entire stay in Tahoe - an oversized sweater, jeans, boots & a wool cape-like coat for staying warm in the snow. A newly thrifted find, I foresee myself getting lots of wear out of this particular coat. The oversized hood has a nice dramatic shape that I like quite a bit. It also makes me feel rather elf-like, which is a fun thought to have whilst exploring the forest.

What better way to take a brand new dress out for a proper test spin than experiencing one of the best & not so great days of your life all rolled into one? Perhaps just experiencing the best day of your life would ultimately be much better, but that would make things much easier and not take testing the limits of emotions evoked through apparel to a more challenging level. For the sake of sparing trivial details, I can honestly say that this dress found adventure and rather than dwelling on anything that makes me feel stressed, I'm choosing to focus on its lovely fishtail hemline that sent me floating through the streets of San Francisco on a day filled with brunch, good conversation, laughter and what is gradually becoming a smaller & less annoying hiccup to an otherwise glorious day. I'd much rather live in the moment & keep a positive focus anyway! Having a lovely dress to do it in makes it all the more easy.

In other news, I got an iPhone. I wouldn't trade it all for the world...but I have to. I head back to work on December 12th, so I'm trying to make the most of the time I have left. I wish selling vintage paid the bills!

Some prints are just meant to be mixed. I will seize any opportunity available to make sure this happens when I see such chemistry between two pieces in my wardrobe, creating a beautiful rayon marriage. This is also a rare occurrence of real time wardrobe blogging, as I'm wearing this as I type right now. Typically, I try to take care of these things in advance, but I've been too busy living my life to document it properly. This Halloween weekend was all about twirling freely amidst a sea of streamers with girlfriends, sharing wine with strangers, making new friends, slumber partying and serenading the ladies with my New Order lyrical skills. Many, many thanks to Isla for being such a gracious hostess and inviting us all to partake in a night of mischief, debauchery and necessary Halloween mayhem! My costume was a last minute interpretation of Mousevox, which basically was just me in some handmade ears and my favorite, fancy cocktail dress.

If it sparkles, my eye will instantly follow. It's true that I have a serious affinity for anything shiny and sequins are no exception. I found this glorious silk blouse as part of a set with this chiffon maxi skirt during one of my last Tennessee thrifting adventures. It was a magical score, indeed, as I had been patiently searching for similar pieces for months. Finding them together just shows it was meant to be, but since I am not a 75 year old ballroom dancer, wearing them separately seems the way to go. Worn during a lovely night of dinner with friends followed by the Portishead show at the Greek Theater this Friday, I felt truly delicate and fancy.

I feel like these pictures embody everything that San Francisco weather has been like lately; bright, breezy and beautiful. On day 2 of the SF Vintner's Market, I decided to opt for flats after watching many girls wobble around in heels the day before. Not that I would be that girl since I was there to taste wine and not drink as much of it as I possibly could in a 4 hour span (insert sound of shattering glasses here). This was also our day for buying several of the things that we tasted on the previous day, so a tote bag was a must. The polka dots were merely my remedy for combatting my exhaustion from going solidly strong for 2 straight days by turning it into cheer. I know I've said this before, but it's basically impossible to feel anything but happy whilst wearing polka dots. My bright green skirt also helped.

This weekend brought the San Francisco Vintners Market, lots of sunshine and sharing fantastic food and drink with friends. If you've been a reader of my blog for a bit, you may know that I have quite a fondness for the vino. Living in Northern California has been quite a treat for me, as I've gotten to experience and discover so many great wines in this region of the country. There were over 150 different local wineries and boutique producers at Fort Mason this weekend for this spectacular 2 day event. The afternoon itself was so completely glorious that Jeff and I decided to spend a bit of time relaxing in the park, enjoying some yummy chocolates that we picked up on our way out and bask in the sunshine. San Francisco's Indian Summer has been such a lovely departure from the hot and humid South. After feeling a bit homesick last week, this was just the type of day that I needed to remind me how truly fortunate I am to live somewhere so beautiful.

I must admit, I feel rather silly not having known about the Alcazar Theater in San Francisco prior to taking these photographs. The name of this darling frock from Modcloth is the Alcazar Dress and, out of curiosity I decided to do a bit of sleuthing on the internet to see what exactly that could mean. Imagine my surprise and delight to find that the print is of a building that's housed by my very own, new city of San Francisco! If only I had known before, I could have taken the afternoon to check out the theater and perhaps had these photos taken there. Regardless, I now have a new landmark to add to my ever growing list of things to see. Exploring a new place is always such great fun.

This weekend, the boyfriend and I headed south to beautiful Pajaro Dunes for a bit of beach time. The Pacific Ocean is much different than the beaches of the Atlantic that I'm used to. It's much, much colder, so I was only brave enough to get in up to my toes. This didn't keep me from frolicking about, running through the sand, flirting with the surf and chasing birds, though. I have a sincere fondness for the ocean. Something about it makes me feel so peaceful and carefree. I'm guessing this is where the saying "Life's a Beach" comes from because it seems to make a lot of people feel the same way.

This Sunday I had the very distinct pleasure of visiting the Alameda Point Antique Faire for the first time. This is the mother of all flea markets! Isla, Ashley, Jenn and Annalise and I spent 4 solid hours wandering around, searching through racks & racks of vintage and didn't even make it through the entire thing! I came home with a few really great pieces, some for the shop and some for myself. Of course, I love searching for vintage and finding it at a great price, but even more so, I love that I have such fantastic lady friends in my new city to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon with. Laughs were had, treasures were found, questionably nutritious food was consumed and future plans for more fun excursions were made. I'd say the day was quite a success & I'm already looking forward to next month so I can do it all over again!

HOW I LOVE THEE, CA

I love wine. I love drinking it, learning about how it's made, discovering new ones that I enjoy and, most importantly, sharing a delicious bottle paired with yummy cheese with friends. Something about wine, more so than any other drink, has such a communal vibe for me that I really enjoy. Having a winemaker friend who lives on a vineyard in the stunning Santa Cruz mountains is definitely a nice perk in this new chapter of my life. Northern California is truly so beautiful that I often feel as though I'm seeing everything here for the first time, despite the fact that I've spent many a visit here over the past year. Is it possible to be head over heels in love with a place? I do think so.

FULL FRINGE

Last week, not only did I get a haircut, but I got my first haircut in a salon in 7 months. I'm terrible about letting professionals cut my hair. When I try to convey to them that I only want a trim, 4 inches seem to disappear from my hair, leaving me scarred and terrified of returning. Ok, that's a little dramatic, but it's definitely frustrating when your stylist simply doesn't listen to you. Anyway, I gave my new SF stylist free reign to do whatever he wanted and I'm pleased! It's been a few years since I've had a full fringe and I'm definitely enjoying it. Even if it's a subtle change from what I had before, it makes a world of difference to me. I love how something so small like this can boost your confidence levels. Now, I'm trying to decide on a change in color, as it badly needs it. Any thoughts/suggestions?

This weekend is going to be filled with flea markets, sample sales, out of town friend time, lady dates & hopefully lots of sunshine. I'm truly loving life in the Bay Area!

My first outfit post as a California resident! My sweetheart was kind enough to snap a few photos for me before an event that we attended last week. His sister is a documentary film maker and one of her films is included in this year's Lunafest Film Festival, which we were fortunate enough to experience. All of the films are by, for and about women (including the much buzzed about How To Be Alone that was circulating around my corner of the blog / twitter world not too long ago). It was truly an uplifting experience, the films were all so well done and, more importantly, all of Lunafest's proceeds go to charitable causes with 15% going to the Breast Cancer Fund and 85% going directly back to local community organizations. The festival is still in full effect, so if you see it coming to a city near you, I high recommend attending. You can see a complete list of dates here.

THE BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS

When planning my recent drive across the country, I was torn between driving through the Southwest or the Midwest. Anyone who has driven through a long stretch of the Midwest before knows it's a less than thrilling experience, but after reading about the Bonneville Salt Flats in Western Utah, my mind was made up. This was my course of trajectory in getting to California. When it comes to interesting natural phenomena, I'm a total nerd. For weeks I read about salt flats, looked at pictures of salt flats and learned everything I could about, you guessed it, salt flats. I could make this a very long winded post about salt flats, but that's not really what this is about (if you're interested, you can read a bit about them here).

By the time I arrived in Utah, I was beyond exhausted. 3 days in a car can leave a girl feeling rather down trodden, but I really felt like something awakened inside of me once I made my pit stop at this amazing site. The salt flats themselves made me feel as though I had stepped out onto the moon for a brief moment. I snapped a few photos, enjoyed a picnic lunch and chatted with fellow travelers, some of who were as equally as thrilled as I and others who gave me puzzled looks when I became overly excited and started spilling out random salt flat facts (say that one 5 times really fast). Just being there felt like I had accomplished a goal of sorts and this filled me with much energy for my drive into California later in the day. The last leg of my drive, through miles of stunning desert in Nevada, was filled with short bursts of intense rain, followed by skies clearing up to rainbows intertwined throughout the mountain range. The last rain shower ended just as I was crossing the California border, where the sky opened up to a double rainbow. Feeling like this guy, I texted anyone I could think of who would appreciate this as much as I. The best response I got was, "California must be smiling because she knows you're here. Welcome home, little mama." And I do, indeed, feel very much at home.

Do you have a dress or a particular article of clothing that you turn to when you need to feel your most elegant and fancy? This dress is just that for me. I discovered this gem a couple of years ago at an antique store in Huntington, WV, hidden in a stack of vintage textiles and it's been a favorite ever since I laid eyes on it. I don't have many opportunities to wear it, but have managed to create a few occasions in my life that have given me the opportunity. I decided to give it a whirl for my going away dinner with my closest friends and family, the weekend before I left Nashville. I feel like it has a bit of a Grecian feel to it, so I thought it appropriate to make a quick stop by Centennial Park and use the to scale replica of The Parthenon that's there as a backdrop. It's funny to me that I'd never taken any photographs there before, as it's such a popular Nashville landmark. I also thought it would be nice to wear a couple of my grandmother's cocktail rings for the occasion. The aquamarine and platinum is one that I inherited after her passing and the diamond one currently belongs to my mother. She was kind enough to offer it to me to wear for the night. It really felt exquisite! There's such an endearing story that goes along with it, too. My grandfather purchased a single diamond chip every year that they were married for 50 years and had the ring made for her as a gift for their 50th wedding anniversary. If that's not incredibly touching and thoughtful, I don't know what is!

For the past year, I've been flip flopping back and forth between Nashville & San Francisco. During my visits to The Bay, I've had quite a few very successful thrifting trips (there really is gold in these hills!) and have been squirreling away jackets and various other pieces that are good for layering, in addition to some seriously great pieces that I plan to list in my shop (hopefully soon!). Now that I'm finally settled out west, I'm so excited to have the opportunity to wear some of the treasures I've acquired that were not exactly climatically appropriate for the hot & humid South.

TRAVELING WOMAN

You may have seen these pictures before, as I used them in a guest post I did about a month ago for The Hummingbird Girls. I find them fitting for my current state, though. On Tuesday, I left a city I called home for most of my life, to journey toward my new home of San Francisco. Unfortunately, I've not even taken my camera out of my bag since I left. Traveling alone and driving 8+ hours a day, has put arriving safely to each destination more at the forefront of my mind than stopping to take pictures. I've seen so many beautiful sites along the way and it seems as though the farther west I go, the more beautiful it all becomes. After driving through open plain, after open plain, after open plain in Kansas and putting the Midwest behind me, I reached Colorado and woke up the next day with a view of the Rocky Mountains outside of my window - breathtaking! The drive through Wyoming seemed long and gave me much time to reflect on where I'm going, all I've done to get to this point and where I'll be going next. My evening ended last night driving under a purple sunsetting sky, surrounded by red cliffs, just as I crossed the Wyoming/Utah border. I've never experienced such a wave of emotions from a natural site before! I felt like I was arriving via postcard, rather than a van. It made me feel so at ease with everything and to try to put it into words right now seems trite when it was really just the opposite. Today, I'll officially be in California, which feels like such an accomplishment to me! Before I reach the Bay Area, I'll be spending the weekend in Lake Tahoe with my sweetheart, decompressing and gathering myself for what's to come.

DEAR NASHVILLE

Dear Nashville,

I left you yesterday. While I write this, I am sitting in my hotel room in Denver, nearly halfway finished with my journey to San Francisco. So much time in the car as left me to reflect on many thoughts and has given me much time to reminisce on my time with you and what's to come for the future. I believe that my experiences during my time with you have molded me into a more confident, braver and ambitious woman and I am grateful for that. Some of the best and some of the most difficult parts of my life all came from my time that we were together and I'm left with no regrets and a deeper knowledge of who I am and who I want to become. While I love you dearly, this move is a necessary part of my personal and professional evolvement. I will never look back at you in vain and I will cherish you as a place to call home no matter where my home in the present will be.

That's exactly what Bay Area business partners, Nila Salinas and James Pollard have created and it's called Selbey! I'm thrilled to have this innovative team sponsoring my blog this month and was happy to be able to pick their brains and tell my readers a bit about the new site and the minds behind it.

MV: Tell us a little bit about yourself, your business, who you are, where you're located.

Nila: Nila Salinas, 26, Co-Founder & CEO of Selbey. Originally from the Midwest (and I love it), but moved to Cali for school and stayed on there after. I love thrifting, daydreaming and cats!

We started Selbey.com an online marketplace for buying and selling clothing in July 2011. We're a web start-up based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

MV: What inspired you to start your business and how would you like to see it develop in the future?

James: My reasons for creating Selbey were pretty selfish - I wanted access to more clothing. The men's section at most thrift stores is one or two racks. I figured by putting clothing online, I would have a bigger selection. As for the future? I would love to help decrease the clothing we send to landfills.

Nila: I often sold to resale shops in the past and was always annoyed when good items of mine were turned away. Things I knew I could sell, but because of the season or current availability at the shop I was selling to, I would walk away with a bag full of unsold clothing. When I decided to keep more of my profits and take my clothing online, I was unhappy with the services available. Large, catch all marketplaces weren't focused enough and I felt like my items would get lost in the abyss. Other sites were too limiting, I could only sell vintage or handmade clothing, when what I really have in my closet is quite a fashionable mix. There is quite a lot that I have that is vintage inspired, but not vintage. So guess being an avid shopper/thrifter and wanting to see a better return, I could only assume there were other people out there like me what would want that kind of service, and thus Selbey came to be!

MV: How would you define your personal style? Where do you draw your greatest influences and what are you heaviest sources of inspiration?

James: I'm obsessed with all thinks folksy and classically American. Billy Reid is by far my favorite designer. I'm always down to rummage through thrift stores looking for jackets. I'm pretty hard on anything I own, so I stick with stuff that is already beaten up or will age
well. I'm also really fond of skinny suits and ties.

Nila: Well, when I actually dress up to look nice, I'm a blouse and pencil or a-line skirt kinda gal. Very classic. I don't show a lot of skin, sorta like a cute librarian. My favorite era of inspiration were the 1930s and 40s with maybe a little 50s and 60s now and then. My inspiration tends to come from my friends around me, the internet (tumblr/fashion blogs like yourself!) and period films!

MV: What are some of your wardrobe wishlist items for the upcoming F/W season?

James: Cotton and knitted bow ties/ties are definitely on the list. I'm always looking out for a check houndstooth 'rabbit' suit, circa 1960s.

Nila: I'm really trying to bring back the Annie Hall look this season. So really all of that, some button ups and trousers. We'll see how that works out!

MV: Anything else exciting that you care to share or that you're particularly excited about these days?

Nila: Really excited to be starting this company. It's pretty liberating to take destiny into your own hands and make something awesome that you hope can ultimately help other people as well.

If you are an avid thrifter like myself, then you probably know how victorious it feels when you find something you've been searching after for a long time. Several months ago, I started lusting after chiffon maxi skirts and I somehow got it in my head that I had to have one in a peachy, neutral tone. While I really try to keep an open mind while thrifting and not search for specific pieces, I do sometimes become fixated on certain styles and keep my eye out for them when shopping. After many months, many thrifting trips and being on the verge of taking the easy way out and buying a peach, chiffon maxi skirt online, I found this glorious treasure of a vintage find for a pittance in comparison of it's newly made match. Even better, it came as a set with a matching silk, bead and sequin embellished, flapper-esque blouse. Together, it's a look that's a bit too granny goes ballroom dancing for my style, but on their own they are two of my favorite, new wardrobe wonders.

AUTUMNAL NOSTALGIA

It's been raining non-stop for nearly 2 days in Nashville and the air is crisp and cool. It almost feels like San Francisco, only much wetter, and it's all making my heart feel full, excited, nostalgic, sad and elated all at once. This is my last week in TN. When I'm not running around, anxiously packing boxes and making last minute travel arrangements, I've found myself feeling quite emotional. The leaves on the trees in my yard turned yellow & brown from the intense heat and drought, but the rain has made them start falling to the ground and I'm reminded that I may not get to see them change colors this Autumn for the first time in my life. This all sounds very dramatic and sad, which I am not (well, sad, at least). I'm just envisioning this place through a different perspective and am noticing so many small things that remind me that everywhere you go, there's something to be enjoyed.
